Learning to work in a team (Social skills)
Overall aims:
- Introducing the concepts: scientific, chemical reaction, reaction of oxidation, floating, changes the state of matter, germination and growth.
- Developing social skills to work in a team like scientists.
- Developing eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills.
Goals:
- To share ideas and take common decisions
- To share responsibility for a task
- To accept leadership and management
- To follow the safety rules and discipline
- To do science in a team with their hands
- To compare together the differences that happened in the experiment
- To observe and talked in a team about what and why happened in the experiment
Intended Learning Outcomes
- To run the experiment in a team
- To explain the initial concepts relationship with the experiment in a team
- To share responsibility of a task in the experiment
- To develop their motivation to learn and engage together with the activities
- To discover together what happened in the scientific process
The structure of the learning pathway
Stage I
Understanding that the essence of team work is to share the work and responsibilities – recognizing different roles team members may play: being a leader, being a writer (responsible for noting the work, preparing drawing etc, keeping track); being a coordinator/ action man; being a specialist/ resource searcher etc.
The teacher or leader Introducing the scientific concepts: scientific, chemical reaction, reaction of oxidation and floating.
- Motivate the Children about the activity
- Ask the Children if they have done a similar activity
Stage II
Changing the role in teamwork and discovering one’ own possibilities – who am I in a team? What are my personal strengths/ advantages/ assets? Value the importance of each role in a team.
Explain scientific contents in a team:
- How to keep apples from turning brown – For work on the concept of chemical reaction and the chemical reaction of oxidation.
- Egg and salt floating experiment – For work on the concept of floating.
- Homemade butter in a jar – For work the concept of changing the state of matter.
- A plant in an egg shell – For work on the concepts of germination and growth.
Stage III
Learning about benefits and problems related to teamwork – what is the most difficult for us?
Designing the experiment and assigned tasks for each kids.
The same resources can be used, depending on the concept that you want to work:
- How to keep apples from turning brown – For work on the concept of chemical reaction and the chemical reaction of oxidation.
- Egg and salt floating experiment – For work on the concept of floating.
- Homemade butter in a jar – For work the concept of changing the state of matter.

Assessment
Initial
1- Ask initial questions about the procedures that we developed in the activity
2- Distribution of tasks between the different members (kids) of the team
Ongoing
1- Formulated hypothesis about what happened in the experiment. Ask questions such as- What do you think is going to happen?
2- What do you think about what is happening?
3- Ask questions such as- Can we do the experiment in other way?
4- All the members of the team describes what they observe and what catches their attention
Final assessment
1- Analyse whether each member (kids) has performed the assigned task
2- Enjoy together and deduce what happened in the experiment
3- Thinking about what happen with the previous prediction (hypothesis)
