Exploring – how osmosis works?

PATHWAY BASED ON SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS
Exploring – how osmosis works?

Goals:

  • Discovering the concepts of osmosis and solution;
  • Investigating the process of osmosis and its application in the kitchen;
  • Developing the children’s research abilities by conducting experiments;
  • Creating the education context to observe and explain the osmosis in different contexts;
  • Strengthening the research attitude in children

Intended Learning Outcomes

The child will be able to:

  • participate in experiments with teacher’s support;
  • observe the chemical reaction of osmosis and explain the concept;
  • undertake the critical reflection on his/ her own learning

The structure of the learning pathway

Stage I

Creating opportunities to discover and build the concept of osmosis:

Stage II

The use of osmosis in the kitchen – investigating different dimensions of chemical reaction.

Stage III

Playing and having fun with osmosis

Assessment

Initial – creating the mind-map – eliciting children’s prior knowledge about chemical processes in nature (What do you know – what kind of chemical processes can you identify? What else would you like to know?)

Ongoing – described in every resource

Final assessment

  1. Returning to the mind-map and reflecting on What have we learned? What was the most intriguing / surprising for you? What else would you like to know about osmosis?
  2. Voting for the most interesting/ exciting experiment (children can vote with stickers or may draw the most fascinating experiment)
  3. Self-evaluation of one’s own learning on the chart prepared by a teacher (children draw + / -/ ?)

The example of the self-evaluating chart:

  • I can explain how osmosis works
  • I can give the example of osmosis in the kitchen or in nature
  • I can conduct experiment like a scientist
  • I can be a cautious scientist – I know how to follow the rules of safety in the scientific lab
  • I can observe and make notes (record the experiment)
  • I can use the osmosis in the kitchen
  • I can measure liquids in different ways
