The M in STEM: Applying Maths to Everyday Life

Goals:

  • To develop pupils’ skills in counting
  • To develop pupils’ skills in measuring non-standard and standard units
  • To develop pupils’ skills in measuring liquids and solids
  • To make pupils aware of the real life application of maths to everyday life

Intended Learning Outcomes

The child will be able to:

  • count ingredients
  • count quantities of ingredients when measuring
  • measure using different kitchen tools eg teaspoon, tablespoon, measuring cup, jug
  • measure a range of liquids and solids
  • identify suitable tools for measuring different types of ingredients

Assessment

Initial
Ask questions to elicit pupils’ prior knowledge and experience in counting and measuring in the kitchen, noting language with which they are already familiar, as well as tools they have already experience using.

Ongoing
Ask pupils to complete a learning log, noting for each experiment/investigation:

  • one thing they enjoyed
  • one thing they learned

Final assessment
Ask pupils to complete a reflection activity sheet when they’ve completed all the experiments, noting the following:

  • their favourite measuring tool; why?
  • other ingredients they think they could use this measuring tool for
